Tottenham extended the contract with the ‘modern giant’ for another year
Tottenham Hotspur have triggered a one-year contract extension option for Son Heung-min, keeping the club captain in north London until June 2026.
The only four in the 143-year history Spurs they scored more goals than Son, who moved to N17 in 2015. After a poor start to his career at Tottenham, the South Korean star has forged a fruitful relationship with Harry Kane – one of the few players with more Spurs goals than Son.
After Kane moved to Bayern Munich in 2023, Son was named club captain. Former Premier League The Golden Boot winner finished as the top scorer during Ange Postecoglou’s debut season in the English capital, but has struggled for form this term.
The son was even on the bench for Tottenham’s last match in the Premier League, which is played only in the last half hour Defeated 2-1 at home to Newcastle United on Saturday.
Three days later, the club confirmed that Son, who was set to become a free agent in the summer, would remain in north London. The club’s statement reads: “We are pleased to announce that we have exercised the option to extend the contract with Heung-Min Son, which will now run until the summer of 2026.
“Joining the club in August 2015, Sonny, 32, has become a global star during his time with us and a modern-day great for Tottenham Hotspur.”
Barcelona had was connected with the switch to Son as he approached free agency, despite suffering from a failed campaign.
Son spent most of last season as Tottenham’s centre-forward Kaneabsent and as Richarlison watched from the treatment room. However, the summer arrival of Dominic Solanke has forced the aging striker back onto the left wing, moving him further from goal – contributing to his miserable tally of five goals in 17 league games so far.
WITH Tottenham interested in a January move for the Paris Saint-Germain centre-forward, Son may not return to midfield any time soon.
