TikTok says it will ‘go dark’ on Sunday without ‘definitive’ guarantee Biden admin won’t enforce ban
TikTok on Friday said the social media platform would “go dark” on Sunday without a “definitive” assurance from the Biden administration that the ban would not be enforced.
“Today’s statements from the Biden White House and the Department of Justice did not provide the necessary clarity and assurance to service providers who are integral to keeping TikTok available to more than 170 million Americans,” TikTok said in a statement posted on X.
It continued: “Unless the Biden administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers who warrant non-implementation, unfortunately, TikTok will be forced to cease operations on January 19.”
The White House said so this week Biden did not plan to implement the ban is set to take effect on Sunday, adding that it will depend on President-elect Trump, who takes office on Monday.
USA The Supreme Court confirmed on Friday bipartisan legislation passed last year banning TikTok unless its Chinese-owned company ByteDance sells it by Sunday, citing national security risks from its ties to China.
Trump said he had to consider the ban before making a decision.
“The decision of the Supreme Court is expected and everyone must respect it,” he said. “My decision on TikTok will be made in the not too distant future, but I need to have time to review the situation. Stay tuned!”
During the presidential campaign, Trump said he would “never ban TikTok” after joining the platform.

Also on Friday, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew thanked Trump for his “commitment to working with us to find solutions that keep TikTok available in the United States. This is a strong stance for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship.”
Chew is expected to attend Monday’s inauguration.
Trump tried to ban TikTok during his first term.
