Sunderland’s £4m+ long-term target is now set to leave his current club this month

Sunderland are now stepping up their hunt for attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window, and Regis Le Bris’ the side could now land one of their long-term targets after he became available at a bargain price, it has been reported.

Sunderland in pursuit of Tom Cannon

Tom Cannon became the subject of the transfer window after Leicester City decided to recall him from his loan at Priority Stoke City fighter, where he scored 11 goals during the first half of the season.

However, the Republic of Ireland international is expected to leave the King Power Stadium for good before the end of the winter window, with Ruud Van Nistelrooy suggesting a move could be on the cards.

“Tom’s situation is being carefully assessed. Decisions need to be made about that. There is still a possibility (he stays at Stoke). But we are looking at his situation in this window, what would be best for him and for the club,” he said before the decision to impeach him was made.

A number of clubs are now believed to be interested in signing the striker, with Everton leading the Premier League interest, although the report suggests he is more likely to return to England’s second tier, where he has thrived this season.

For this purpose, Sunderland are one of the sides who want to sign the 22-year-oldbut Burnley and Sheffield United are also in the mix for his signature as the trio of promotion hopefuls battle for his signature.

Now though, an alternative forward option has emerged for the Black Cats, and it’s one they’ve been tracking for some time.

Sunderland target available for £4.5m

That comes in the form of Matija Frigan, who is currently with Belgium’s Westerlo but could be on the move this winter. Earlier in the winter window it was announced that Sunderland were “looking seriously” forwardwho has scored six times in the Pro League so far this season.

They also have a historic interest in the 21-year-old, having tried to sign him in 2023 before his move to Belgium, but in the end, the offer for Croatia was rejected.

Black cats are serious.

Now could be the perfect opportunity for them to capitalize on that interest, with report from Belgium [Via Sport Witness] claiming he wants to leave Belgium this monthwhile Westerlo are also happy to let him go despite having a contract until 2028 with the Pro League side.

It was reported that his performances for the Belgian side “did not fully convince his club” of his ability, and that as a result “they would be willing to let Frigan go” for the right price.

That price, it adds, is just “the €5.5m they paid” (£4.5m), which could make him a potential bargain if the Black Cats are still convinced of his talent.
