Spurs are chasing a “quality” England star on a free
A little more than a year and a half has passed since then Ange Postecoglou took responsibility for Tottenham Hotspurand to say that a lot happened in that period would be an understatement.
The Australian started like a house on fire and led the team to the top Premier League ten games into his tenure, but since then the north Londoners’ league form has been disastrous and, as things stand, they are in 12th place.
However, there were encouraging signs, from their scintillating style of football to their brash confidence against the best teams in the country and, most importantly, currently leading Liverpool 1-0 ahead of the second leg League Cup semi-final.

So while things weren’t perfect, there were enough signs to show that the Lilywhites were on the right track, although in order to maintain that next season and overtake Arsenal and Chelsea, Daniel Levy and Co will have to bring in the right players to help the manager.
Fortunately, recent reports have linked the club with the England international who could be available on a free in the summer and has won comparisons with the incredible Martin Odegaard.
Tottenham Hotspur is chasing the England national team
According to a recent reporter’s report on the broadcast Dean Jones on the Ranks FC podcastTottenham are interested in LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes.
Speaking on the podcast, Jones revealed that the North Londoners are “looking” at central and attacking midfielders this month and that the former Manchester United prospect is one of the players they are interested in.
The Englishman’s contract was set at expires in the summer and the transfer pundit claims the club are trying to convince him to join for free.
However, he also revealed that there is a chance something could happen this month, as his contract situation would likely prevent the French side from demanding too much.
All in all, while signing Gomes this month could be an option, it seems far more likely that he would make a free move in the summer, and given his prodigious ability, it would be a sensational move for Spurs, especially as he beats comparisons with the equally sensational Odegaard.
How Gomes compares to Odegaard
Okay, before we get into a few other reasons why Tottenham should go and sign Gomes this year, let’s examine this Odegaard comparison and where it came from, because even though the fans may not like him, he is a brilliant midfielder.
Well, that primarily derived from FBrefwhich compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each, and, in this case, concludes that the Norwegian is the fifth most similar midfielder to the Englishman over the last 365 days.
The best way to see where this comparison came from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair are close, including but not limited to expected non-penalty goals, assists, progressive passes received, crosses into the box, picks won and more, all per 90.

On top of the statistical similarities between the two, both also occupy similar roles in terms of contributing to their team’s offense, but they are not outstanding playmakers, instead operating as hybrid eights that are involved in virtually all phases of the game.
That said, while comparisons to one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders are reason enough to sign someone, the former Manchester United ace can also bring his experience to the squad.
For example, “incredibly” talent, as described by Statman Dave, has now performed brilliantly in the Portuguese and French top-flights and is now a regular in the England set-up, having won four senior caps since September, two of which were starts.
Ultimately, Spurs will need to bring in more and more talent over the coming years to help Postecoglou achieve his lofty goals, and signing Gomes for a small fee this month or for free in the summer seems like a complete no-brainer.
