Rohit Sharma Openly Tells BCCI ‘He Will Remain Captain Until…’
Indian national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma will continue in his role as Test and ODI captain for some time. According to Dainik Jagran reports, the senior batsman himself is learned to have said that he will lead the team until BCCI finds a suitable successor.
A review meeting conducted by the BCCI to address the poor performance of the Indian national cricket team in recent times was held in Mumbai on Saturday. BCCI officials along with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Rohit Sharma were involved in the discussions.
Rohit Sharma will remain captain for the next few months until the management chooses the next captain
One of the top topics of the meeting was the future captain of the Indian Test and ODI team. Rohit Sharma is said to have decided to continue as the leader in both formats until the selectors choose his successor.
According to reports, Rohit told the BCCI that he would “remain the skipper for the next few months until the board chooses a future captain” and that whoever is chosen will have his “full support”. It was also decided that he will lead the team in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
However, the decision on his successor will be taken after the ICC Champions Trophy. India is currently captained by Rohit Sharma in Tests and ODIs while Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the captain of the team in the T20I format after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Reports add that there were discussions related to giving the captaincy to Test Jasprit Bumrah. He led the team in the two matches in Australia in the absence of Rohit Sharma. But there were several questions regarding getting the captaincy title in the longest format of the game.
There were fears that Bumrah might lead India in the five-match competition due to workload management issues. The top fast bowler, after playing four matches in Australia, got injured during the fifth match of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has been concerned about his fitness ever since.
Virat Kohli will get some time, talks with him are likely to happen after ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
BCCI also discussed Virat Kohli’s poor performance during the meeting. It is learned that the officials have decided to give some time to the batsman and talks regarding his place in the team, with poor performances, will be held after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
BCCI also wants all the big players to play in the domestic circuit. However, if any player is withdrawn due to workload management, then they will need to obtain permission from the physio, head coach and coach. The governing body also emphasized on giving more importance to the fitness of the players.
