Oscar De La Hoya on Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney Rematch: “There’s no need for it”

Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya says he would prefer Ryan Garcia to forget about his rematch with Devin Haney and instead wants to fight WBO welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez.

With Ryan’s charisma and massive social media following, a bout between him and Teofim (21-1, 13 KOs) would bring in plenty of pay-per-view buys on DAZN.

Rematch is not necessary

It would be a match that would attract fans around the world as Teofim is still seen as an undefeated fighter in many people’s eyes as his loss to George Kambosos Jr. was close and could have gone either way. Then Teo was sick and injured.

Turki Al-Sheikh is reportedly negotiating a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. That still doesn’t sit well with De La Hoya, who sees Devin as having already been won over by Garcia in his one-sided 12-round blowout over the Bay Area native.

Haney should be back in the order because he has a chance against Kingry, and he completely failed. All this Haney crying since then about Ryan’s failed test looks bad, showing that he can’t admit he’s been defeated. You can bet that if the rematch happens, Haney will use Ryan’s failed PED test as his marketing strategy throughout the promotion.

Image concern

It would be very bad for Ryan’s career if Devin and his dad, Bill, reminded fans in every interview that he tested positive for Ostarine. Even if Ryan wins again, his image will forever be tarnished just because of the Haneys’ constant swearing.

There could be trouble if Haney tries to force Ryan to agree to VADA against his wishes. He is doubted by Devin and his dad, Bill Haney, who push so hard.

De La Hoya doesn’t see the point in Kingry fighting a beaten opponent, Haney, as he soundly defeated him last year on April 20th. Returning it for no real reason other than money is not good enough. Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) can do a lot more.

The Golden Boy’s Plan

“I personally don’t see the need for it. Ryan destroyed him and that’s the point,” Oscar De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV about not seeing the need for a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. “We have to make the best possible fights.

“There are fighters that we can match Ryan up to anybody and make it a great event. If [Kingry and Teofimo] are the best at the moment, and that’s what people want to see, we have to succeed,” said De La Hoya.

A fight between Ryan and Theo would sell and pique the interest of fans. However, Haney is not a PPV attraction, has no charisma and has little to say in interviews. His father, Bill Haney, gets fans interested in his fights. Dev already had his chance, so he blew it.

Haney had no money in that fight, and the only reason he saw the final bell was because the referee saved him in the seventh round.
