Officials suspend the arrest of President Yoon Suk Yeol

A day of high drama has come to a close in South Korea, with investigators calling off an attempt to arrest ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol after a six-hour standoff with a security team outside his home.

“We have determined that an arrest is impossible,” said the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which investigated Yoon’s short-lived declaration of emergency.

“We will decide on the next steps after a review,” the CIO said, adding that Yoon’s “refusal of the legal process” was “deeply regrettable.”

Yoon’s supporters, who had camped outside the presidential residence for days, cheered with song and dance as the suspension was announced. “We won,” they chanted.
