New Orleans Saints donate $1 million to relief efforts after terrorist attack near stadium
The New Orleans Saints have pledged to donate $1 million to help victims of the terrorist attack in the French Quarter on New Year’s Day.
14 people were killedand dozens were injured after a man drove down Bourbon Street in a white pick-up truck emblazoned with an ISIS flag at a dangerous speed.
The French Quarter is less than two miles from Caesars Superdome, where the Saints play their home games.

“Our community has experienced an unimaginable tragedy and our collective hearts are broken as we mourn the victims and survivors of the New Year’s Eve terrorist attack in New Orleans,” Saints owner Gayle Benson said in a statement. “As a league, our cities and teams compete at the highest levels of competition and share spirited rivalries. Our staff and players work tirelessly to achieve our goals and share in the wins and losses.
“However, through football we are also united and stand hand-in-hand against all forms of hatred. We will defeat terror and fear with unwavering determination and purpose rooted in love, compassion and kindness. Our focus has always been on delivering aid quickly and effectively, and grateful We are working with the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) and the United Way to ensure that these funds reach those who need them most.”

Because of the attack, a bowl of sugarwhich was played at the Saints stadium, was postponed for a day. The stadium was filled with heavy security, but that didn’t stop the fans from packing the house anyway.
After the national anthem, shouts of “USA!” chanted from the crowd – the anthem was preceded by a minute of silence for the victims.

On December 29, the Saints played their last home game of the season. They will finish the season in Tampa Bay against the Buccaneers.
