Manchester United began negotiations with Lecce on a contract with sign versatile left back Patrick Dorgu, according to reports.
The Red Devils’ poor season took a turn for the worse on Sunday as they suffered their sixth home defeat in the Premier League this season. Brighton & Hove Albion emerged victorious 3-1 at Old Trafford, handing Amorim his fourth defeat in front of the United faithful since taking over from Erik ten Hag.
United’s defensive problems are well documented, as is Amorim’s preference to play a wing system. After the defeat to BrightonThe Portuguese insisted “I’m not going to change the way I see the game” before warning that his players and the club’s fans will “suffer” because he has “one way of doing things”.
One player Amorim was hoping to sign was Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, who worked with the turbocharged Portuguese full-back at Sporting CP. But now it seems likely that the 22-year-old will extended the contract in the capital of Franceending any prospect of a reunion in Manchester.
The Athletic report that United’s attention has shifted to Lecce’s Dorga and discussions have begun over a potential transfer.
The 20-year-old, who has been capped four times for Denmark, only signed a new four-year contract with Lecce in October, but his impressive performances in Serie A have caught the eye of United’s scouts.
Dorgu has started 19 of Lecce’s 21 Serie A games this season, not only at left back, but also at right back and right wing. It was these attacking tendencies that might have caught the eye of Amorim, who used the ever-improving Amado as a forward right winger from time to time.
UnitedThe urgent need to sign a new left-back has been highlighted by Diogo Dalot’s inconsistent displays in a role he is largely unfamiliar with. The Portugal international is a right-back by trade, but is increasingly appearing on the opposite flank as Luke Shaw continues to struggle with various injury problems.
Noussair Mazraoui is also capable of playing on the left and has come on at times, but he is also far stronger on the right and is preferred in that role to allow Amad to progress further.
