Jurgen Klopp assesses Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool and is looking for a transfer to his former club

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he hopes Mohamed Salah will extend his contract at the club.

The Egyptian winger is out of contract in the summer but there is hope on Merseyside that he will agree to extend his stay at Anfield.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Salah continues to excel at Liverpool, scoring 21 goals in 28 appearances this season, becoming the fourth-highest goalscorer in the club’s history along the way.

Speaking at his first press conference as Red Bull’s global head of football, Klopp spoke of Salah’s importance to the club.

He said: “I hope he stays.

“He’s the biggest striker LFC has had in modern times. They obviously had other good hitters, really good hitters.

“But a fantastic player, a fantastic human being, an outstanding athlete, the best ambassador [Egypt] could have, really fantastic in almost all departments. So I hope he stays at Liverpool.”

Klopp said goodbye to Liverpool at the end of last season, marking the end of a hugely successful era that saw the Reds win the Premier League, the Champions League and several other silverware along the way.

His departure was a shock to the football world, and the German declared that he no longer had the energy for the bench.

He has since taken up the role of head of football at Red Bull, which has drawn criticism from fans of his former club.

But Klopp has now explained why he has embraced his new role away from direct management.

He added: “I’ve always said I love what I do, but the moment I felt I couldn’t do the job anymore that was it. It was the same in Mainz, Dortmund and Liverpool. I am brutally honest with myself.

“It wasn’t just energy. After more than 1,000 games on the sidelines, thousands of press conferences, I didn’t want to do it anymore. I didn’t want to stop working either, I just wanted to do something different and a new start, and this opportunity provides that.

“I heard things, but I didn’t have any plans in that direction. I was focused on being a manager. I wanted to be the best version of myself in that role. When you’re in a job like I’ve been doing for so long, it’s super intense.

“Game after game, you maintain a certain level and I wasn’t completely satisfied with that. I wanted to learn new things and when I heard about this role, I knew I would do it.”

Liverpool have excelled since new boss Arne Slott took over. The Reds are top of the Premier League, in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup and top of the Champions League.
