Japanese companies are preparing for Trump’s tariffs, according to a Reuters survey
TOKYO (Reuters) – Most Japanese companies doing business in the United States are bracing for possible additional tariffs under the incoming Trump administration, according to a survey released by the Japan External Trade Organization on Friday.
Those efforts include strengthening U.S. manufacturing and sourcing and considering raising product prices, the survey found. It was carried out earlier this month and targeted 694 companies, a trade body linked to the Japanese government said.
Of the 123 respondents expected to be affected by tariff policies, nearly three-quarters said the effects would be negative for their business, while 17% said they would be mixed and 10% said they would be positive.
Japanese companies have also expressed concern about the impact of US tariffs on other countries, while a proposed 60% tariff on Chinese goods is seen as having the biggest impact on supply chains.
Among companies expecting changes in immigration and visa policies, more than 60% expect a negative impact due to labor shortages.
