IPL 2025 starts on March 21, BCCI confirms


The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will start on March 21 and end on May 25. The announcement was made by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla during an exclusive chat with Sports Tak. The dates come as a slight change from the previously proposed start of March 14.

The IPL will start immediately after the 2025 Champions Trophy

The upcoming season IPL will follow immediately after ICC Champions Trophywhich lasts from February 19 to March 9. The tight schedule highlights a packed calendar for Indian cricket, with events back to back.

The opener of IPL 2025 will be held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata and the rest of the schedule is expected to be announced soon.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), led by a new captain, will enter the new season as the defending champions. KKR won the title last year with a win Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in an exciting final.

Fans will be eager to see how the teams will shape up after the recent IPL 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Several high-profile transfers took place during the auction, along with significant changes in squads.

One of the most talked about changes was Rishabh Pant’s move to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The former Delhi Capitals (DC) captain joined LSG while KL Rahul, who captained LSG last season, was picked by DC.

Future IPL seasons have also been announced

The BCCI has also revealed the tentative dates for the next two IPL seasons:

  • IPL 2026: March 15 to May 31
  • IPL 2027: March 14 to May 30

Apart from updating the schedule, the BCCI has appointed a new IPL commissioner for a one-year term. The identity of the new commissioner has yet to be revealed, but their role will be crucial in ensuring the smooth running of the league.

The next BCCI meeting, scheduled for January 18 and 19, will focus on finalizing India’s 2025 Champions Trophy squad and reviewing plans for the upcoming IPL season.
