Indiana attorney general files suit against sheriff for defying allies over illegal immigration
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita announced Friday that his office has filed a lawsuit against the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department. Joseph nad illegal immigration.
“I have filed a lawsuit against the St. Joseph County Sheriff [William] Redman and his department for their persistent practice of refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities,” Rokita told reporters at a news conference in South Bend, Indiana.
He continued, “This includes refusing to properly notify ICE of the release of illegal aliens and also refusing to honor ICE detainees. This deliberate decision not to cooperate with federal immigration authorities provides a safe harbor for criminal aliens who need to be removed from our country and this county.”
ICE detainers refer to people ICE is asking local authorities to hold until an agent can take custody of them.

He said the sheriff’s actions will cause more migrants in the country to come illegally to St. Louis County. Joseph and commit crimes.
“I refuse as your attorney general to just stand by and watch lawlessness happen from law enforcement officers,” he added.
Rokita said the sheriff’s department remains adamant about Indiana law after multiple attempts to communicate with the sheriff.
He noted that despite the lawsuit, Indiana will continue to support its law enforcement, “but we will also hold those who deserve to be held accountable, accountable.”
“My office will not stop in our work here on this issue until the law is upheld and our people turn over the illegal aliens first,” he said.

Rokita said his office would “happily drop the lawsuit” if the sheriff’s department cooperates.
He added that his office is also exploring potential labor monitoring networks in the state amid reports from residents of an influx of migrants into communities.

The lawsuit comes as President Trump He is unveiling his mass deportation plan, and the White House said hundreds of migrants in the country illegally have been removed since he was sworn in on Monday.
