Five Premier League teams sought to avoid embarrassment as the 2024/25 FA Cup third round gets underway. continued with seven games on Sunday.

Fifth-tier Tamworth were hoping for a huge turnaround at home to Tottenham, while fourth-tier Bromley – promoted last season – visited Newcastle.

Ipswich Town hosted Bristol Rovers and Stockport County hosted Crystal Palace as the two League One sides chased shocks and bottom side Southampton hosted Championship club Swansea City.

Arsenal also faced Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium in an all-Premier League clash. Here’s what happened, including scorers and highlights.

Arsenal vs Man United: Penalties decisive

Bruno Fernandes’ strike put United ahead seven minutes after half-time, but the momentum appeared to be in Arsenal’s favor after Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card for the visitors two minutes before Gabriel struck to equalise.

United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır then made a brilliant save from Martin Odegaard’s spot-kick and repeated the trick against Kai Havertz in the shoot-out as Ruben Amorim’s side cruised through on penalties 5-3 after holding out for a 1-1 draw.

Tamworth v Tottenham: Spurs survive scare

Tottenham named a strong side but had an uncomfortable afternoon at Tamworth’s 4,000-capacity Lamb Ground, only going ahead after Nathan Tshikuna’s scrappy own goal in the 101st minute.

Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson also scored in extra time as Ange Postecoglou’s side secured a flattering 3-0 win.

Newcastle v Bromley: The Magpies are made to work

Twelfth-placed in League Two, Bromley enjoyed a spectacular start in front of more than 52,000 fans when Cameron Congreve won with a header and scored from the rebound.

Newcastle equalized eight minutes later with a superb strike from Lewis Miley, and William Osula also struck in the 61st minute for his first goal for the club, sealing a 3-1 win following a penalty from half-time substitute Anthony Gordon.

Ipswich v Bristol Rovers: The hosts hit the gas

Having played at home to Maidstone United last season, Ipswich were clearly intent on avoiding another shock as Kalvin Phillips’ long-range strike put the Tractor Boys ahead after 18 minutes.

Jack Clarke doubled their lead six minutes later and Jack Taylor scored the third and final goal of the game eight minutes before half-time, although the absence of a video assistant referee review until the fifth round may have saved the midfielder from being ruled offside.

Crystal Palace v Stockport: Eze’s goal wins it

England striker Eberechi Eze’s fourth-minute strike proved to be the only goal of the game as Palace made it nine games unbeaten outside the EFL Cup.

Play-off-chasing Stockport are now without a win in five matches, although Isaac Olaofe was unlucky to have his second-half strike saved by an inspired Matt Turner save.

Southampton vs Swansea: Dibling in the doubleheader

Kamaldeen Sulemana’s deft first-time strike and Tyler Dibling’s cross put Southampton 2-0 up at half-time and on course for their first win in 12 games.

Dibling took advantage of some shaky defending to score his second goal after the break for the Premier League’s bottom side, although Joe Allen fired low against the post from the edge of the box for the Swans.

Hull v Doncaster: Rovers shock Tigers

Harry Clifton hit the winning penalty as fourth-tier Doncaster celebrated 5-4 in the shootout after a 1-1 draw at Championship contenders Hull.

Luke Molyneux put Rovers ahead six minutes after the break with a composed finish, but Gustavo Puerta equalized 10 minutes from time, converting after Mason Burstow’s shot hit the post.
