(Reuters) – Memorial services for former US President Jimmy Carter are expected to be held over six days in Georgia and Washington, DC, after he died on December 29 at the age of 100.
Here are some details about his funeral plan:
WHEN IS THE FUNERAL?
Carter’s (NYSE: ) state funeral, a national honor traditionally reserved for heads of state, begins Saturday with ceremonies in Carter’s home state of Georgia, according to a schedule released by the U.S. military.
THE MAIN MOMENTS
The motorcade will take Carter through his hometown of Plains, Georgia, to Atlanta, with a stop in the state capital and then to the Carter Presidential Center, where he will rest until he is flown to Washington on Tuesday.
In Washington, he will be laid to rest in the Rotunda of the US Capitol. George HW Bush was the last US president to lie in state there, a tradition that goes back to Abraham Lincoln.
Members of Congress will honor Carter beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, and the public will be invited from 7:00 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday from 7:00 a.m.
A funeral service will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET (1500 GMT), after which Carter’s body will be flown to Georgia for a private burial.
President Joe Biden said last year that Carter asked him to deliver the eulogy at the service. President-elect Donald Trump said he would also attend.
Afterwards, Carter will be flown back to Georgia and buried in a private ceremony in his hometown of Plains.
PUBLIC OBSERVATIONS
Biden declared a national day of mourning on January 9. He ordered American flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days at military posts and on federal buildings.
In lieu of flowers, Carter’s family has asked for donations to his Atlanta-based eponymous center to support his work in global health, peace and human rights.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed on Thursday, a customary gesture to honor deceased presidents.
