Erik ten Hag completes first managerial role following Man Utd departure
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could be appointed at Borussia Dortmund this week if the Bundesliga side lose their Champions League match with Bologna on Tuesday night, according to a report in Germany.
Defeated last season Champions League the finalists have struggled for consistency since Nuri Sahin took over in the summer, with results dropping in recent weeks. The club won just one of their last five meetings before the winter break and started 2025 with three consecutive defeats.
Dropped into the bottom half Bundesliga table with more than half of the campaign gone, Dortmund are still in a good position to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The Ruhr region side play Bologna in the penultimate game of the league stage this midweek and if Sahin’s side lose to the struggling Italians – who are yet to win a European game this season – the current head coach could be forced to leave, according to Sky Sports Germany.
The report claims former United boss Ten Hag is considered a “serious contender” for the position. The Dutch coach is no stranger to German football after spending two years as a coach Bayern Munichsecond team between 2013 and 2015.
Ten Hag was regularly observed has been attending Dortmund games this season, having been out of work since being sacked by United at the end of October.
While Ten Hag’s immediate availability is a factor in his favour, Dortmund could turn to a temporary solution before trying to lure Sebastian Hoeness away from Stuttgart. The impressive young manager led his team to an incredible second place finish last season and has them back among the top four teams in the division.
Stuttgart are unlikely to let Hoeness leave mid-season, but the 42-year-old is understood to have a €7-8m release clause in his contract which could be activated in the summer.
