Donald Trump has been spared punishment for his “secret money” conviction, avoiding any sanctions for his historic criminal case days before he is set to re-enter the White House.

At a hearing in Manhattan on Friday, in which Trump appeared virtually from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Judge Juan Merchan refused to sentence the president-elect to prison or impose any fines, instead releasing him on an “unconditional discharge.”

The proceedings did not attract much of the media frenzy that followed Trump’s seven-week trial last year, which took place in the middle of his third presidential campaign. It marks a symbolic end to a years-long effort by state and federal prosecutors to convict Trump of a range of alleged crimes, from trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election to withholding classified documents after he previously left the White House.

This is a developing story
