Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world
Donald Trump held his first phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping since leaving the White House in 2021, days before the top Chinese official is due to visit Washington to attend the inauguration of the US president-elect.
Chinese state media reported that Xi and Trump spoke on Friday, but did not provide further details. Trump’s new national security team has been in contact with officials in Beijing, but the call between the Chinese leader and the incoming US president marks the first direct conversation between the two in four years.
The invitation comes three days before Trump is to be inaugurated in Washington in a ceremony attended by Han Zheng, China’s vice president.
