Does Hollywood matter more in politics? The ‘biggest stars’ couldn’t choose Harris
Hollywood “doesn’t matter” in the political sphere, some entertainment insiders upset in a new report.
Vulture spoke with several members of the industry on the impact of President Donald Trump’s re-election and how it will affect the entertainment industry. On condition of anonymity, most believed that people would “generally become more self-censored and less able to criticize the current political moment, if not less influential overall.”
“Hollywood doesn’t matter as much as it thinks it does,” said the talent manager. “You had the biggest stars in the world supporting Kamala Harris. She couldn’t attract stronger advocates. And that didn’t move the needle. What does that tell you? It’s disturbing because people and things you hold in high esteem don’t drive culture, as much as I love movies, they they are not the initiator.”
A number of major Hollywood celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Alec Baldwin, Leonardo DiCaprio and Harrison Ford have come out in support former Vice President Kamala Harris on the eve of the presidential elections.
Despite their support, Harris lost to Trump, losing all seven major swing states as well as the election. Harris also failed to convert a single country that voted for Trump in 2020.
Other Hollywood insiders noted “preemptive exhaustion” among people, largely due to what they saw as a reaction to “he woke up broken” way of thinking.
“The move away from ‘woke’ was already in motion even before Trump was re-elected,” the blockbuster producer told Vulture.
They continued: “We are witnessing the departure of studio executives who were hired to promote DEI in film and television. Hollywood has veered too far to the left over the past few years and a reckoning had to come.”
Another production executive commented in the report that “there’s not a strong desire in Hollywood for rhetorical storytelling,” with some fearing it could hurt creativity.
The veteran talent manager and producer said, “What I’m seeing internally and with my friends across the business, whether they’re in the studios or producers or creatives or their agents, is that we’re in an acute period of scarcity right now. The volume is far less. Everyone, from the customer on down, is afraid to be brave and make decisions that put them at risk.”
Others have openly expressed fear of being targeted by Trump for expressing political opinions.
“It is clear that Trump will come later [Disney CEO Bob] Iger,” the consultant warned Vulture. “Whatever he can do is— with him and Disney on the ground the DeSantis and Florida stuff.“

However, not everyone in Hollywood is nervous about the future. The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav was upbeat about the change during an earnings call in November, suggesting that Trump might ease restrictions on media acquisitions.
“It could offer an opportunity for consolidation that would have a real positive and accelerating effect on this industry,” Zaslav said.
