‘Desperate attempt’: Senators get affidavit alleging Hegseth’s previous marriage

Democratic senators on the House Armed Services Committee are currently reviewing an affidavit that says he is a nominee for secretary of defense Pete Hegseth made his second wife fear for her safety.

Fox News obtained an affidavit from Hegseth’s ex-sister-in-law, Danielle Hegseth, who said they both had problems with alcohol addiction — and he sometimes made his ex-wife, Samantha, fear for her safety. Danielle Hegseth was married to Pete Hegseth’s brother. She is not the sister of Samantha, Pete Hegseth’s second wife.

In a statement to Fox News, Pete Hegseth’s attorney, Tim Parlatore, said, “Sam has never alleged abuse, she has signed court documents confirming there was no abuse and recently confirmed the same during an interview with the FBI. Late Claims Danielle Dietrich, a far-left anti-Trump Democrat who divorced Mr. Hegseth’s brother and never got along with the Hegseth family, do nothing to change that, Ms. Dietrich had a shot at the entire Hegseth family, but now falsely accuses Sam of lying to the court. and the FBI because of private, undocumented statements she allegedly made 10 years ago.”

Danielle Hegseth provided an anecdote in the document, recalling that Samantha once hid in a closet from her husband.

But Danielle Hegseth added that she herself never witnessed any abuse, physical or sexual, by Pete against Samantha.

The affidavit provides additional anecdotes about Hegseth’s alleged heavy drinking, citing several specific occasions, including one at a strip club.

Member of the ranking commission Jack ReedDR.I., said in a statement: “As I have said for months, reports of Mr. Hegseth’s history of alleged sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and public misconduct require a thorough background investigation. I was concerned that the background check process was inadequate. , and this statement corroborates my alleged patterns of abuse and misconduct by Mr. Hegseth in a disturbing manner. Such conduct would disqualify any member from holding any leadership position in the military, let alone be confirmed as Minister of Defense.”

Samantha Hegseth denies any physical abuse in a statement first reported by NBC News. “There was no physical abuse in my marriage. This is the only further statement I will make to you, I have let you know that I am not and will not be talking about my marriage to Pete. Please respect this decision,” she said. allegedly he said.

Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., who is on the committee, told reporters, “This just confirms what we already know about Mr. Hegseth’s behavior and the way he lived his life and the kinds of opinions he had about women.”

“We’ll let the Republicans make their own statement, but I think it just confirms that we already know he’s absolutely 100% unqualified for this job, his mood, his behavior, the problems we have with sexual abuse, with financial mismanagement,” she said. .

“I’m telling you, there’s a lot in this affidavit, and any part of it would disqualify a candidate to lead our military,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., another member of the committee, told reporters.

However, Republicans on the committee will not necessarily be swayed by the allegations.

New Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., who also sits on the committee, wrote on X: “This is a last-minute desperate attempt by Democrats and the media to smear Pete Hegseth and condemn his nomination. Pete’s ex-wife is on the record saying the allegations fake, but the media doesn’t care because it hurts the Republican. No one should fall for this.”
