David Warner picks Australia’s opening batsman for tour of Sri Lanka
Former Australian opener David Warner expressed his preference for Travis Head to open the batting for Australia in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, starting on January 29 in Galle. Warner’s comments come amid debate over the ideal line-up for the Australian team as they prepare for challenging conditions in the subcontinent.
Editorial pick by David Warner
Warner, who was the head of Australian cricket, emphasized the importance of experience when it comes to opening the innings in Sri Lanka. He admitted that doc Konstas himself showed impressive skills during his debut series against India, he lacks the experience that Head brings to the table. “We haven’t had much success in the subcontinent over the years. What does the success of the Australian cricket team look like? It’s a good start and an opportunity to capitalize,” Warner stated as quoted by Perth Now.

He highlighted Head’s previous performances in subcontinental conditions, noting that he had opened five times in such environments, scoring 223 at an average of 55.75. Warner believes this experience gives Head an edge over Konstas, who is yet to play cricket in the subcontinent.
Despite leaning towards Head, Warner hasn’t completely dismissed Konstas’ potential. The young batsman grabbed the headlines with some gutsy knocks during his debut innings against India, demonstrating his ability to take on the bowlers Jasprit Bumrah. However, Warner pointed out that while Konstas showed promise, he could benefit from more experience before taking on opening responsibilities in challenging conditions. Warner noted, “Can Sam do it too? You probably could. But I think with the experience that Trav has and the opponents are probably going, ‘Whoa, it’s Travis Head, we’re going to have to be on point from the first ball.'”
Double opening strategy?
In a twist to his analysis, Warner also suggested that opening both Head and Konstas could be an exciting option. “For me, it’s about them playing their game and what they need to do, which is basically instinct,” he said. “I think it would be a good move if they did that (open with Head). On the other hand, it wouldn’t be a bad move for Sam to open the shots.”
This dual approach could provide Australia with a dynamic opening partnership that could capitalize on the early overs against the Sri Lankan bowlers.
