Edmonton Oilers star Corey Perry had arguably one of the most unusual assists of his career during the third quarter of Tuesday night’s game against the top-seeded Washington Capitals.
The Oilers were trailing 3-1 early in the third period when center Leon Draisaitl slipped into Washington’s zone, making a quick pass to Perry, who won Capitals netminder Logan Thompson reduce the lead to one goal behind.

However, Thompson didn’t seem to think about the sequence of events, telling officials that something was thrown onto the ice before the pass was made.

“It’s a first,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said after the game, via ESPN.
“We were just talking about it in the coach’s office. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a National Hockey League game with nachos on the ice. Did they save them? Maybe we can get them in the locker room.”

A replay of the play showed Perry skating around the concession stand and the favorite finding the net. Thompson admitted after the game that he should have played until the whistle.
“I’ve never seen that before. Obviously I have to play until the whistle. It’s my honor,” Thompson said, adding that he saw a fan throw a plate of nachos.
“I wasn’t too happy. But credit to him. He gave them a goal,” he said, suggesting the fan was an Oilers fan.

For his part, Perry admitted he didn’t even notice the tray.
Despite the setback, the Capitals were able to hold onto a 3-2 lead for the win extending their winning streak to five straight. The Oilers have now dropped two in a row for the first time since forward Connor McDavid was suspended for three games for cross-checking.
