Promoter Eddie Hearn does not know who Canelo Alvarez will fight in May before he faces Terence Crawford in September. IBF Super Middleweight Champion William Scull is the one who makes sense if Canelo wants to regain that belt to become undisputed again.
There aren’t many options for Canelo to fight in May, unless he wants to take on some tougher fighters, like Christian Mbilli or Diego Pacheco. Hearn is hesitant to let the 23-year-old Pacheco fight Canelo early in her career and watch him fight.
Canelo’s loyalty
“I don’t know who Canelo is going to fight in May. Who is he going to fight, William Scull? Charlo? It doesn’t seem like the PBC is doing business with the Crawford fight. I don’t think they necessarily want to fight him. Canelo, it’s not that he doesn’t have any loyalty, but he doesn’t give a f*** either. If it works for Canelo Alvarez, it works for Canelo Alvarez,” Eddie Hearn said Sean Zittel When asked if he thinks Canelo will fight for the season in Riyadh in May.
“It is with us. We did an amazing job for him. When we had nothing for him, he went somewhere else. As long as you understand that and know that and have that connection. I thought he liked working with us, but all of a sudden, we can only give him a buffalo rematch, and he doesn’t want a rematch, he’ll go somewhere else.
“I feel like he feels he can negotiate that fight with His Excellency, he’s going to do it himself and I think that’s what he’s doing. I think it’s going to be in the United States. The problem with Riyadh fighting for an American audience, His Excellency won’t fight at 7:00 a.m. in Riyadh, the time zone required for the American pay-per-view.
Hearn thinks the Canelo vs. Terence Crawford to be in the US, not Riyadh, because that would draw the numbers in the States, it would have to be during normal hours for pay-per-view events. Comparing it in Riyadh would mean it would be shown in the early afternoon and that wouldn’t work.
“Crawford-Canelo in the afternoon at 2:00 p.m. isn’t going to do the numbers he’s going to do,” Hearn said. “Crawford-Canelo would do a big number on PPV in America. I don’t know, but I think that fight will take place in America. Canelo appeared at the Ring magazine awards, and he wouldn’t do that if it wasn’t for him a big financial opportunity because it’s none of his business,” Hearn said.
