34th match in Big Bash League (BBL)|14 between Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades it was a nervous encounter at Bellerive Oval, with both teams fighting to the last.
The Hurricanes, chasing 155 to win, managed to secure a dramatic four-wicket victory in a last-out thriller, thanks to an explosive contribution Team David and an impressive spell of bowling Riley Meredith.
The lonely heroism of Jacob Bethell
Asked to bat first, Melbourne Renegades posted a total of 154/7 in their 20 overs. The highlight of their changes was Jacob Bethellwho played an outstanding knock of 87 runs off 50 balls. Bethell’s innings featured 8 fours and 4 sixes, keeping the Hurricanes bowlers under pressure throughout.
However, the Renegades’ middle order failed to build on his solid foundations, and they struggled to pick up the pace in the later stages of the innings. Meredith was the best bowler for Hobart, taking 3 crucial wickets for 36 runs in his 4 overs. Skipper support Nathan Ellis and Mitchell Owenwho took one wicket each, further limited the Renegades scoring.

Their solid partnerships at the top kept the required run rate in check but the Renegades bowlers, led by Bethell, kept the pressure on. Bethell’s 2 wickets in his 3-over spell sent the middle order into a frenzy and wickets at regular intervals meant the game was a tight affair as the Hurricanes closed in on the target. Fergus O’Neill, Callum Stowand Tom Rogers each took a wicket but were unable to stop the Hurricanes continuing their chase.
The match is going to the end, Team Davida middle-order batsman, he played an explosive episode, scoring 24 runs off just 15 balls. His aggressive play, which included 2 sixes and a four, saw the Hurricanes home with 2 balls to spare, finishing on 155/6. His invaluable contribution under pressure sealed victory for Hobart and confirmed their place in the 2024-25 BBL play-offs.
Despite the defeat, Bethell was named man of the match for his brilliant all-round performance. His innings of 87 helped the Renegades post a challenging total and his two wickets were instrumental in keeping the Hurricanes’ chase in check. However, it was the Hurricanes’ timely execution with both bat and ball that ultimately made the difference in this thrilling contest.
