Axar Patel’s open attitude to become India’s new vice-captain
Indian national cricket team all-rounder Axar Patel spoke about being appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian team in T20Is. He said the role comes with added responsibility as it forces them to make tough decisions and give honest opinions.
Indian national cricket team all-rounder Axar Patel was recently named as the vice-captain of the team for the upcoming five-match T20I series against the England national cricket team. It will be the first time that he has been included in the leadership group of the national team.

Indian national cricket team all-rounder Axar will act as substitute for Suryakumar Yadav in the five-match T20I series against England national cricket team. The series between the teams is all set to begin on Wednesday (February 22) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Patel was rewarded with the role after his consistent performances for the team in the shortest format of the game. The all-rounder has played a big role for the team in T20Is with bat and ball and has also been a key player for the team in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The upcoming T20I series against England cricket team will be a great opportunity for him to take his game to a higher level. The all-rounder would be keen to continue his good form and help his team win the five-match T20I series against the Jos Buttler-led side.

Speaking about being vice-captain, Patel said the role of leader comes with added responsibility. He also spoke about his conversation with Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir. Speaking to reporters ahead of the first T20I, he said:
“Being vice-captain comes with an added responsibility. Sometimes we have to take tough decisions and give honest opinions and that was the discussion with Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir.”
My focus remains on what I can contribute when I am playing and when I am not playing – Axar Patel
Axar Patel also talked about his experience and said that he knows what his strengths are and that he only focuses on that. He said he is not thinking about his selection because his focus is on how he can contribute. He added:
“I played in all three formats. I know what I can do and what my strengths are. I just focus on what I can do. I don’t think much when I’m not selected or when I’m not playing. My focus is still on what I can contribute when I’m playing and when I’m not. “
Axar Patel is having a great performance against England and would like to continue it. He has also been selected in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad and the series will act as a great preparation for him.
