Ange Postecoglou: Tottenham boss admits ‘We are playing with fire’ if club fails to do more January | Football news
Ange PosteCoglou has admitted injury-hit Tottenham will be “playing with fire” if they fail to make more signings during the final 10 days of the January transfer window.
Spurs were without 14 players for their much-needed 3-2 win over Hoffenheim in the Europa League due to a combination of injuries and fitness.
That number will decrease slightly for Sunday’s visit of Leicester, but Tottenham will be without Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke for the foreseeable future, while Cristian Romero and Micky van de ven will return to the semi-final second Carabao Cup first leg vs Liverpool on February 6, live Sky Sports.
Postecoglou has battled with a limited squad over the past two months and has managed to keep Spurs in contention for the trophy with three wins, but the club have slipped to 15th in the Premier League.
With Yves Bissoum, Johnson and Solanke the latest to have suffered injuries over the past week, the 59-year-old admitted that reinforcements were needed, although he stressed that technical director Johan Lange was aware of the situation. goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky the only arrival This month.
Asked if he had money to spend, Postecoglou replied: “I don’t ask those questions. It’s not something I’m involved in, it’s not something I expose myself to.
“My discussions with Johan and the club were trying to get help for the players and I will let them do their job.
“I still have to manage that team and get them ready. We got back at 2am last night. I’m not trying to find opportunities for the club, that’s not my role at the moment. There’s no time to do that.
“Especially I have daily communication with Johan, and he tries everything possible to get the help we need.
“I don’t think I’m stating anything other than the obvious and to come here and say anything else would be disingenuous. This playing group needs help, there’s no doubt about that.
“We’re kind of playing with fire by not bringing anyone in, but the flip side of that is the club is trying to change that situation.”
Ajax forward Brobbey is not a target for Spurs
The latest from Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge Speaking on the transfer show:
“Spurs want to go forward and that is the main target.
“Spurs are desperate for a forward as Dominic Solanke will be out for a while and Richarlison has only just returned.
“There was talk of Spurs entering the race for Ajax Go ahead Brian Brobbey, but my understanding is that this is not the case.
“They are forward, but I understand Brobbey is not so forward.”
Ange: We are in a much better place to be successful
Spurs received a timely boost on Wednesday with the news of vice-captain Romero, but Postecoglou preached patience with the World Cup winner.
Postecoglou has revealed the plan for first-choice centre-backs Romero and Van de Ven to prepare them for next month’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool, followed by an FA Cup tie at Aston Villa three days later.
“Of the long terraces, they’re the only two, Micky and Romero, who have a chance for that week, but we still have like 12 days or something,” postecoglou mused.
“Part of that process is to see how they handle training over the next week or so. They’re both scheduled around that time to be available.”
Spurs’ injury crisis has seen Postecoglou question his methods and level of intensity in training, but he insists the club is in a better place than when he took over in the summer of 2023.
He added: “I think the squad we’ve got together now, they’re an exciting squad and when they’re all fit I think the club will benefit, not just this year but for many years to come.
“We have some outstanding people who have come into the club in every area, in every aspect who I think will contribute to making this club successful in the future. I firmly believe that.
“Now, the only evidence most people want to look at is where we are at the moment in terms of our performances, especially in the league.
“But from my perspective, as someone who came into a club that wanted change and needed change, I have no doubt that we are in a much better place for what the club needs to be successful.”
