Almiron ‘could leave’ this week says Howe

Newcastle winger Miguel Almiron could leave the club before the transfer deadline, according to manager Eddie Howe.

Almiron has been a key player for Newcastle since joining from American club Atlanta six years ago but has fallen down the pecking order, last scoring in December 2023.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move to MLS and came close to joining the Saudi club last summer.

Howe said: “I think Miggy’s head has been very, very solid here. He’s been great in training this week and I haven’t seen any moments where I’ve thought oh, I’ve got to deal with it or talk to him or have a deeper conversation.

“I think we are both aware of the situation. Yes, there is interest in him from other clubs. There is potentially a chance he could leave before the window, but until that moment, and if that moment never comes, he is still a valuable member of the team.

“We love him with pieces, he has great energy and a character that never changed for a second, he was a top professional. And let’s see what happens.”

Newcastle resoundingly beat Bournemouth last weekend to definitively end their long winning streak.

Howe says forward Callum Wilson is close to returning, while goalkeeper Nick Pope could be in the squad to face Southampton on Saturday.

He said: “It’s too early for Callum. Callum is still on track to come back right at the start of February.

“He’s progressing well. We’re trying to do the right things with him and make sure he’s robust enough and has all the work behind him and the load behind him before he starts training with the group.

“But he seems very positive. What a huge player he would be to welcome.

“There’s a chance Nick will be in the squad. He’s started training with the group again and it’s great to see Nick back and his presence, his positivity he brings.

“I’ve seen him do some really good things this week, so yeah, delighted to have him back in the mix.”
