Ajit Agarkar reveals why Shubman Gill beat Jasprit Bumrah for the vice-captaincy post

Chief selector of Indian cricket team, Ajit Agarkar, spoke about the reasons behind appointing Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 team. He said that they always look to the future while making decisions.

The Indian national cricket team unveiled its squad for the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday (January 18). The focus was on the team’s vice-captain, who was none other than Gill, who was given the role of Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the tournament.

Shubman Gill was added to the leadership group after the 2024 T20 World Cup, captained the team in Zimbabwe and then became vice-captain ahead of the Sri Lanka series

Gill was added to the leadership group after the T20 World Cup 2024. He was asked to lead the team in the T20I series against the Zimbabwe national cricket team. And then after that he was appointed vice-captain of the white ball team for the tour of Sri Lanka.

Few reports have claimed that Jasprit Bumrah will be named as the vice-captain of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 team, especially after his heroics with the ball and as captain in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But that was not the case.

The selectors have opted to back Shubman Gill in that role, hinting that the batsman could take over from Rohit Sharma after the batsman calls time on his career. Gill was, without a doubt, one of the best talents in the country.

I won’t dig too much, but a lot of feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room – Ajit Agarkar on Shubman Gill’s appointment as vice-captain

Talking about Gill being appointed as vice-captain, he said that the young batsman was the vice-captain in Sri Lanka and they took feedback from the dressing room while making the decision. Addressing journalists, he explained:

“Gill was also vice-captain in Sri Lanka,” Agarkar said. “You always want to be on the lookout for leaders. I’m not going to do a lot of research, but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the locker room.”

Shubman Gill has developed into one of the best openers of the team in a short period of time, he has 2328 runs in 47 innings

Shubman Gill has arguably developed into one of the team’s best openers in a short span of time. He scored 2328 One Day International (ODI) runs in 47 innings at an average of 58.20. He will be extremely important for his team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as he bats at the top.

Shubman Gill has recently come under the scanner for his inconsistency. ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a great opportunity for him to answer all his critics in style and help his team lift the title, where India will play all their matches in UAE.
