Adam Gilchrist takes a hard look at Shubman Gill’s batting struggles
Legendary Australian goalkeeper Adam Gilchrist gave a harsh assessment Indiayoung batsman Shubman Gill. Gilchrist’s remarks came after Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25where Gill endured a miserable run with the bat. Despite being hailed as the future of Indian cricket, his lackluster performances have raised serious questions about his fitness for the No. 3 role and his focus on the game.
Disappointing series against Australia for Shubman Gill
Gill’s performance on BGT fell far short of expectations. Playing three Tests after missing the first due to injury, he managed just 93 runs in five innings, at a paltry average of 18.60. Entrusted with the key No.3 position, Gill struggled against Australia’s bowlers, whose precise lines and lengths repeatedly revealed flaws in his footwork and technique. It was a stark contrast to the promise he had shown earlier in his career, where he was seen as a reliable anchor in India’s batting line-up.
Harsh remarks by Adam Gilchrist
Speaking on a popular YouTube channel Prairie Fire ClubGilchrist did not skimp. He rated Gill’s performance just 4 out of 10, citing his inability to rise to the occasion. In a scathing comment, the former cricketer hit out at Gill’s apparent focus on his looks.
“I wanted to give him a three, but I will give him a four. No cricketer in the world has better hair when he takes off his helmet. As soon as that helmet comes off, it’s perfect.” Gilchrist joked. His remarks highlighted the need for Gill to prioritize running over aesthetics, hinting that consistent performance should come before personal style.

A rising star in troubled waters
Shubman Gill, who is considered a potential successor Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharmahe was earmarked as the future leader of Indian cricket. His five centuries and seven fifties in 32 Tests, with 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05, highlight his talent. However, his inability to adapt to high-pressure situations, especially against a world-class bowling attack like Australia’s, cast doubt on his temperament and fitness.
While India is getting ready for its own England tour in June 2025questions loom over Gill’s place on the sidelines. The English conditions, known for their swing and seam, will require technical resilience and mental strength. Gill’s recent struggles suggest he has significant work to do, both improving his technique and silencing his critics.
