155th Open: St Andrews to host major in 2027, R&A announces | Golf news
St Andrews will host the 155th Open in 2027 when the major tournament returns to the home of golf.
The Championship, to be played from July 15-18, returns to St Andrews for the first time since the 150th Open in 2022 when Cameron Smith shot a superb final round 64 on the Old Course to lift the famous Claret Jug.
It will also mark 100 years since legendary amateur Bobby Jones triumphed at The Open at St Andrews in 1927 when he successfully defended the title he had won the previous year at Royal Lytham & St Annes with a six-shot victory.
“There is something incredibly special about The Open being played on the Old Course and so many great champions have walked these fairways since it was first played here in 1873,” said Mark Darbon, CEO of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
“St Andrews is the home of golf and creates a unique atmosphere for fans and players, as well as providing an incredible spectacle on television and digitally for millions of viewers around the world.
“It promises to be another milestone at one of the biggest and most historic sporting events and we will do everything we can to make it an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”
The Old Course at St Andrews first hosted The Open in 1873 when the 13th Championship was first played on the 18-hole course and was won by Tom Kidd. Since then, he has held the championship on 30 occasions, the last time in 2022.
