South Korean lawmakers on Friday unexpectedly voted to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo, in the second ouster of a head of state this month after a short-lived military decree on Dec. 3. according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Han’s predecessor, President Yoon Suk Yeol, had been impeached just two weeks before, after earlier this month he imposed a six-hour state of emergency for the first time since a military coup in 1979, citing the need to “protect the constitutional order based on freedom and root out disgraceful pro-North Korean anti-state groups, who are stealing the freedom and happiness of our people,” according to NBC News.
