Ruben Amorim is confident despite Man Utd’s poor form ahead of the big clash with Newcastle
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has sent an upbeat message to fans ahead of his side’s final Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Monday.
There wasn’t much to get excited about for the new coach during his first month at the helm. Amorim lost five of his first ten matches – the worst record of any United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
United limped to a a 2-0 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day, marking a third successive reverse and their fourth league defeat in December. The club have not lost five top-flight games in the same month since September 1962.
Despite the terrible statistics – from of which there are many – Amorim drew something positive by looking at the bigger picture. “If we want to make the long-term changes we want Manchester Unitedthen we have to go through it step by step,” said the Portuguese boss United Review. “We are looking to implement a new way of playing, at the busiest time of the year, so there are short-term costs for our long-term goals.
“However, I will say that the players are working hard to accept and use all the new information and instructions that they receive. The longer they do this, the easier it will be for them, and then the comfort and confidence in our game will grow.”
The 39-year-old head coach added: “I’ve seen enough in the last few weeks to realize we have a lot of the ingredients we need to be successful, and I remain as confident as I was on my first day here that we will achieve.”
Amorim started his tenure with two wins and a draw, but then warned that a “storm” was on the way. That prediction proved remarkably accurate with the ensuing five-game losing streak.
United’s last game in 2024 is at home against the Newcastle team delight in a dramatically contrasting array of shapes; Eddie Howe’s energetic side scored 14 goals in four straight wins.
While Amorim admitted that his position will remain “in danger” if he doesn’t get results quickly, he was happy to keep an eye on the club’s broad vision.
“We also need to work on longer-term goals such as creating the right environment and culture for success, and work on the pathway between our academy and the first team to develop players with the qualities we need to achieve our high ambitions as a club,” added Amorim.
