Player ratings as Havertz fires Gunners to victory
Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 1-0 at home on Friday night to move into second place in the Premier League table.
On a night that could easily have turned into a night of great frustration for the Gunners, Kai Havertz calmed the nerves with an early opener. Breaking forward from a deeper role in midfield, Arsenal’s upright German connected Leandro Trossard’s firm cross over the line from close range in the 23rd minute.
Ipswich, wounded by a 4-0 batting at the hands of Newcastle United last time, he started in an energetic central block, the uniformed mass of blue shirts hastily rushing to cover any dangerous passages.
The visitors may have been punctured early on, but they did not lose their determination. Ipswich they also benefited from a bit of profligacy in front of goal from their hosts. Gabriel nodded wide from a corner, Martin Odegaard blazed over after a meandering weave and Havertz could only brush his nails against the ball when he was presented with the magnificent sight of the goal.
Despite a late storm, Arsenal managed to maintain their slender lead without much difficulty, climbing above a struggling Chelsea in Premier League standings to get six points closer to Liverpool.
